What it's like

Prager is a small family operation set along Lewelling Lane, a little off the main Highway 29 traffic, on grounds that feel secluded even though the location is central. Port is the specialty here, which is unusual in a valley built around Cabernet, and family members often greet guests themselves. It is a calmer, more personal stop than the big-name estates.

People who want something different from a standard Cabernet flight, couples who like a quiet seated tasting, and anyone who enjoys dessert wines. It also suits visitors who have already done a few big-name tastings and want a change of pace.

What to book

The seated tasting is $50 per person and features four ports and wines. Guests keep the tasting glass as a souvenir. Appointments can be scheduled in advance through Tock, and same-day walk-in appointments may be available, but booking ahead is the safer plan. You can also call 800-969-7678 for reservations.

Hours are Monday to Wednesday and Friday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Thursday and Sunday they open at 11:00 a.m., closing at 4:30 p.m. They are open seven days a week.

Ports are rich and higher in alcohol than table wine, so plan a designated driver or a rideshare, and keep the afternoon light.

How it fits into a day

Prager works well as a short late-morning or mid-afternoon stop, around an hour. Because it is only a few minutes from central St. Helena, you can pair it with a table-wine tasting at Charles Krug or Merryvale and finish with lunch in town. It also makes a sweet last stop before dinner, when something a little richer feels right.
