What it's like

Merryvale is right on Main Street in St. Helena, and the heart of the visit is its historic Cask Room, where several of the tastings are held. The wines lean toward concentrated hillside fruit, and the house approach to tannin is a recurring theme if you ask the host questions. Most experiences run 90 minutes, so this is a settle-in visit rather than a quick pour.

Who it's best for

A good pick for people who want a menu of choices at different price points: casual visitors, couples who want a structured seated tasting, and wine students who like to learn. The Blind Tasting Experience, 120 minutes at $140 per person, teaches you to work out a wine by taste and smell without the label, and it suits curious groups.

What to book

The Winery Exclusives Experience is $50 per person and is the easiest entry point. It covers small-production red and white current releases made only for the winery. Walk-ins are accepted when space allows, though a reservation is recommended. Step up to the Terroir Experience at $80 per person, which pairs single-vineyard estate wines with cheese, or the Grand Cru Experience at $150, held in a private barrel suite with small bites and library wines. The Profile Estate Vertical Tasting and Vineyard Lunch is $300 per person at the estate vineyard and needs 72 hours notice. Book through Tock, and check current opening hours on their site before heading over.

As always, sort out your driving beforehand: a designated driver, a rideshare, or a guided tour.

How it fits into a day

Because it sits in town, Merryvale is walkable from restaurants and shops, which makes it a natural mid-day appointment. Pair it with a morning at Charles Krug or an afternoon at V. Sattui, and you have a full St. Helena day without much time in the car. Allow about an hour and a half for the visit itself.
