Flora Springs Winery

What it's like

Flora Springs has been a family operation in the valley since 1978, and the St. Helena visitor spot on the south end of town leans into the idea of a year-long cycle in the vineyard. The rooms are organized around that idea: there are several caves, each themed on a different season, plus courtyard seating and a small bar named for the Roman goddess Flora, who gives the winery its name. It feels designed, but not stiff, and the setting sits right at the foot of the Mayacamas range.

Who it's best for

People who like a tasting with a bit of atmosphere. If you want to move between rooms rather than sit at one table for an hour, this works well. It also suits Cabernet drinkers, since one of the two experiences builds toward the winery's flagship blend, Trilogy. Small groups are the sweet spot.

What to book

There are two experiences, both reserved through Tock:

• The Floralis Experience in the Bloom Cave walks through the main wines in the lineup and finishes with the Trilogy blend.
• The Awakening Experience in the Awakening Cave is a shorter, curated pour of three wines: Awakening, Harvest and Bloom.

The winery recommends reserving for parties of up to six, because the venues fill quickly. Larger groups need to book ahead by email. Be on time: reservations cancelled without proper notice, or guests more than 30 minutes late, can be charged a fee, and they ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel. It is Highway 29 country, so plan the driving. Pick a designated driver, or book a rideshare or a winery tour for the day.

How it fits into a day

It is an easy morning or early-afternoon stop if you are staying in St. Helena. Pair it with a lunch in town, then head up valley toward Calistoga, or south toward Rutherford and a stop such as Grgich Hills. Check the current days and hours on their site before you go, since they have changed recently.
