What it's like
Markham is on the Highway 29 corridor north of St. Helena, and the setting mixes an indoor tasting room with a garden patio for sitting outside. A historic stone cellar, about 150 years old, adds some character. The house is best known for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the team describes its Wine Ambassadors as friendly guides who take you through limited-production and single-vineyard wines at your own pace.
Who it's best for
People who like a relaxed, low-pressure tasting, travelers with a leashed dog (they are welcome), and groups that cannot commit to a rigid schedule. It is a good place to try Merlot done seriously if you have written the grape off.
What to book
The winery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Walk-ins are welcome, and reservations can be made online or by phone, which is the safer bet for weekends or groups. Tasting options and per-person prices appear in the booking system, so check the current menu on their Tock page before you go. You can reach the team at 707.963.5292 or reservations@markhamvineyards.com.
Plan your drive with care. Name a designated driver, take a rideshare or join a tour, because the patio is easy to linger on.
How it fits into a day
Markham is a natural partner to Freemark Abbey, which is nearby on the same road, so the two make a comfortable half-day without much driving. If you want to add a table-wine stop closer to downtown St. Helena, Charles Krug and Merryvale are both within a short drive. Give the visit about an hour, longer if you settle in on the patio.
