What it's like
Ehlers Estate sits on Ehlers Lane just north of St. Helena, and its tastings are built around the grounds: you can tour the estate and enjoy views from the Belvedere. The program is seated and paced, with options for a more self-guided rhythm. The lineup centers on a five-wine tasting that includes the Estate Blanc and current-release reds, and the "1886" Cabernet is the wine many guests talk about.
Who it's best for
Small groups and couples who want a quiet, unhurried tasting rather than a bar. It is a fit for guests who like a view and a longer sit, and for those who want to pair wine with a proper meal. It is not the place for a drop-in.
What to book
The Estate Tasting is $125 per person and is limited to parties of 6 or under. The Belvedere Experience is $150 per person. At the Table is $225 per person and includes a four-course meal, in partnership with the restaurant Violetto. There is also an Early Tasting, limited to six guests per party and 60 minutes, which comes with early-morning pastry pairings. The Olive Grove experience requires a bottle purchase. Check the visit page for the booking link and current hours. Questions can go to 707.963.5972 or info@ehlersestate.com.
Because tastings are seated and generous, line up a designated driver, a rideshare or a driver service.
How it fits into a day
Ehlers is a good anchor for an early appointment, especially the Early Tasting, which leaves the rest of the morning free. Afterward you can head to town for lunch, or to Spottswoode or Corison for a second, similarly small-scale visit. Plan about an hour and a half.
