What it's like
Crocker & Starr is a short drive from the center of St. Helena, down Dowdell Lane. The tasting is built as a walk rather than a sit-down: you are welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine and taken out among the estate's regeneratively and sustainably farmed vines. After that you come back for Sauvignon Blanc and the estate wines, tasted at a shaded garden arbor.
Who it's best for
Guests who like to see where the grapes grow before they taste. It is a good fit for couples, small groups and anyone who finds a conventional tasting-room bar a little impersonal. Plan on a fairly slow, outdoor-leaning visit.
What to book
There are two tastings, each about 75 minutes:
- Wine-only tasting, $95 per guest.
- Elevated tasting with cheese and charcuterie, $125 per guest. The pairing needs at least 48 hours' notice.
Standard reservations are for up to six guests. For a larger party, contact the team at 707-967-9111 or reservations@crockerstarr.com. One tasting fee is waived with a membership signup or a three-bottle red wine purchase. Reserve through Tock.
Appointments only, so book ahead. Since you will be walking outside, bring a hat in summer and a layer for cooler mornings. As always in the valley, arrange a designated driver, a rideshare or a tour.
How it fits into a day
At about an hour and fifteen minutes, it fits well as a late-morning start. From here, lunch in St. Helena is close by, and you can follow with an afternoon visit to a neighboring producer. Check their site for current days and hours before you plan the rest of the day around it.
