What it's like

V. Sattui is the winery you pick when you want the whole day in one place. There is a full artisan deli with sandwiches, salads, cheeses, charcuterie and gelato, about two and a half acres of shaded grounds with picnic tables, estate gardens, and underground cellars and museum caves to wander through. It is lively, especially on weekends, and it feels more like a village market than a hushed tasting room.

Tastings come in a few formats: guided tastings, guided tour and tastings, and wines-by-the-glass experiences, with shaded outdoor and indoor venues. The entry tasting is typically listed from $45 per person, but prices and formats change, so confirm on the reservations page before booking.

Who it's best for

Families, mixed groups, and anyone who wants lunch and tasting without a second stop. It works well for people who are not wine specialists and just want a pleasant afternoon with a picnic. Note that outside food and beverages are not permitted; everything you need is sold in their marketplace.

What to book

The winery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the deli keeps the same schedule. Weekend capacity is limited, and they highly recommend tasting reservations on weekends, which is also what gives you access to retail and picnicking. On Saturdays and Sundays a BBQ food truck runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., weather permitting. Book through their reservations page.

Plan transport ahead of time. With a picnic and a few flights, a designated driver, rideshare or a tour is the sensible way to do it.

How it fits into a day

V. Sattui is on White Lane just off Highway 29 south of downtown St. Helena, so it is an easy first or last stop. Many people tack it onto a morning at Charles Krug or Merryvale, or make it the lunch break between two quieter appointments. Allow two hours if you plan to picnic.
