What it's like
Charles Krug dates to 1861, which makes it the oldest winery estate in the valley, and the Mondavi family has run it since 1943. The tasting program is built around the old Redwood Cellar, a working historic space rather than a polished showroom, so you get a sense of how long people have been making wine on this stretch of Main Street.
The entry-level Estate Tasting is $50 per guest and walks through a range of current-release, small-lot wines. If you want to go deeper, the Cabernet Connoisseur tasting is $75 per guest, a seated 60-minute flight of four limited-production estate Cabernet Sauvignons. Some experiences add a tour of the estate vineyards, and wood-fired pizzas are served Thursday through Sunday, which is handy if you want lunch without leaving the property.
Who it's best for
People who like a bit of history with their Cabernet, and anyone building a first-time St. Helena itinerary who wants one of the true old-guard names. It also suits groups: the estate hosts large private events, so a bigger party is not an unusual request. Kids and non-drinkers are welcome, with a $10 fee for each guest over the age of 2.
What to book
Book the Estate Tasting if you want the broad introduction, or the Cabernet Connoisseur if Cabernet is the reason you came. Reservations go through Tock. Cancellation windows differ by experience: 24 hours for the Estate Tasting and Cabernet Connoisseur, and 48 hours for the Tour and Tasting. Wine club members taste complimentary. Check their site for current opening hours before you set out.
As with every tasting in the valley, plan your ride in advance: name a designated driver, hire a car, or book a tour operator.
How it fits into a day
Charles Krug sits on the Main Street side of St. Helena, so it pairs easily with a morning here and lunch in town. Neighbors like Merryvale and V. Sattui are close enough to link into a relaxed tasting day without much driving. Give the Krug visit around an hour to ninety minutes, longer if you add the pizza.
