What it's like

Heitz Cellar has been making single-vineyard wine since 1966, and today visitors choose between two locations. The Salon is on Highway 29 and hosts the more approachable tastings. The Home Ranch is on Taplin Road and has a historic stone cellar from 1898 and a biodynamic farm. The tone is polished, with white-glove concierge-style service.

Who it's best for

Cabernet drinkers who want to understand individual vineyards, and collectors who like a deeper tasting menu. The range also gives a modest option, so a curious first-timer is not shut out. Children under 21 are not permitted at The Salon, and pets other than service animals are not allowed.

What to book

The winery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and prior reservations are required, though walk-ins are accommodated if available. At The Salon, The Napa Valley Legacy is $75 per person, and The Single-Vineyard Legacy is $125. At The Home Ranch, the Haynes Vineyard and Ink Grade tastings are $150 each, The Estate Legacy is $200, and Martha's Vineyard Legacy is $300. The Rutherford Legacy, held at Trailside and The Salon, is $350. Members taste complimentary, and fees refund with wine purchases. An artisan cheese and charcuterie plate is a $25 add-on.
