What it's like
Freemark Abbey is a historic estate dating to 1886, on the Highway 29 stretch north of downtown St. Helena. It is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and its tastings range from a quick stand-up pour to long seated comparisons, so you can decide how deep to go.
Who it's best for
Cabernet fans who like to compare vintages and appellations, and budget-conscious visitors who appreciate that there is a no-cost entry point. It also works for people who want to taste a library vertical without committing to a luxury price.
What to book
The Napa Valley Original Tasting is complimentary: a 30-minute stand-up bar tasting of current releases, offered Thursdays and Sundays only, for up to 6 guests. For a seated visit, the Appellation Tasting is $50 per person, a 60-minute experience with six red wines. The Napa Valley Library Tasting is $76 per person, a vertical of 2012, 2013 and 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet. The Cabernet Comparison is $100 per person, across several Napa Valley appellations, and the Decades Tasting is $250 per person, six Cabernets from the 1996, 2006 and 2016 vintages.
Groups of four to six can reserve online through Tock; larger parties should call 707-302-3717. Check their site for current opening hours.
As always, plan for a designated driver or a rideshare, especially if you choose one of the longer comparisons.
How it fits into a day
Because it sits just north of town, Freemark Abbey slots in nicely before or after Markham, which is a short drive away, and the two together make a relaxed half-day. If you would rather start in town, pair it with Charles Krug or Merryvale. The bar tasting is a fine fifteen-minute detour; the seated flights deserve a full hour.
