What it's like
Spottswoode sits on Madrona Avenue in St. Helena, on a historic estate that has been in continuous operation since 1882 and in the Novak family since 1972. A visit here is closer to an invitation to a private property than a drop-in tasting. The grounds include estate gardens and pre-Prohibition buildings, and the vineyard is certified organic and Demeter Biodynamic. The winery is also a Certified B Corporation.
The estate focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Who it's best for
Anyone who cares how wine is farmed, or who wants a quiet, intimate visit with a bit of history. It is an excellent match for Cabernet lovers who prefer a guided conversation to a bar and for small groups who plan ahead. It is less suited to spontaneous or large-group outings.
What to book
Advance reservations are required through the reservation page. Two experiences are offered. The Spottswoode Estate Tour & Tasting is a guided vineyard tour with tastings of the Sauvignon Blanc, the Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon and the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The Then and Now: Library & Barrel Tasting goes further, adding library vintages and a barrel sample of the Estate Cabernet. Check the reservation page for current pricing and times, or contact the winery at tours@spottswoode.com or 707/963-0134.
As this is a seated, multi-wine visit, arrange a designated driver or a ride.
How it fits into a day
The estate is a short drive from downtown St. Helena, so it is easy to anchor a morning appointment here and then walk or drive into town for lunch. Because visits are small and scheduled, treat it as a fixed point in the day and fill around it with something more casual, such as a stop at V. Sattui, or a Main Street lunch.
