Tres Sabores

What it's like

Tres Sabores is a small, family-run estate on the western Rutherford bench, owned and run by winemaker Julie Johnson. It is a certified organic grower, and the tasting is a slow one: you sit at a private table next to the vineyard while a host takes you through five selections of estate and other limited-release wines. It feels more like visiting a friend's place than a tasting room.

Who it's best for

People who like small places, organic farming and a quieter pace. The winery describes itself as family and dog friendly, so it works for a group that includes kids or a well-behaved dog. Large parties are a poor fit.

What to book

Tastings are by appointment only. A typical tasting runs about ninety minutes, with a first tasting and tour at 10 am and the last starting at 3 pm. They are open Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, and closed Tuesdays. To reserve, call 707-967-8027 or use the booking link on their site. Prices change, so confirm the current tasting fee when you reserve.

Virtual tastings are also offered if you cannot make it in person. For the drive, arrange a designated driver, a rideshare or a tour.

How it fits into a day

Set aside two hours including arrival. The location on South Whitehall Lane puts you in the middle of the Rutherford area, close to Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. It combines well with another appointment in Rutherford or Oakville, and with lunch in St. Helena. Confirm the current hours and days on their site before you go.
