Quintessa

What it's like

Quintessa is a small-group, host-led visit. There is no drop-in tasting room. Each experience begins with a walk through the 280-acre property in Rutherford, with views over the appellation, followed by a seated tasting. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically across 26 blocks, and the host explains how those blocks become the wines you taste.

Five experiences are offered, all about 90 minutes. Communal Estate Experience is $125 per guest for up to four. Estate Experience is $175 for up to six. Collector's Experience is $200 for up to four, weekends only. Quintessential Experience is $225 for up to eight. Autumn at the Estate is $300 for up to five.

Who it's best for

Serious Cabernet and Bordeaux-style red drinkers, and anyone who wants the vineyard context along with the wine. It is a better fit for couples and small groups than large parties. All guests must be 21 or older.

Everything is by appointment. Email reservations@quintessa.com or call 707.286.2730. The estate is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Most experiences run Thursday to Monday, the Communal Estate Experience runs Monday, Thursday and Friday, and the Collector's is Saturday and Sunday only. A credit card is needed at booking, and full refunds are available with 24 hours' cancellation notice. Check current times with the winery before you go.

Arrange a designated driver, rideshare or tour. Silverado Trail is easy driving, but you will be tasting serious reds.

How it fits into a day

Plan one anchor visit here rather than a rushed one. Start in the morning slot, then have lunch in St. Helena, or pair it with another Rutherford appointment such as Mumm Napa or Honig nearby.
