What it's like
Tank Garage is a very different kind of Napa stop: a restored 1930s-era gas station on Foothill Boulevard, with a loud, irreverent style. The wines are small, limited-production bottlings. The tasting room is not for everyone, though: the decor includes adult imagery and profanity.
Who it's best for
Wine drinkers who want something casual and offbeat after a run of grand estates, and families who want a tasting where kids can come along. The Family Tasting welcomes children under 21 with adult supervision, though children must be included in the group count, no strollers are allowed at tables, and constant supervision is expected.
What to book
The Lubrication Tasting is $40 per person for non-members, lasts about 50 to 65 minutes, and covers four seasonal, limited-production wines. It seats 1 to 6 guests. The Family Tasting is the same $40 and the same wines. Large groups of 7 to 8 pay $75 per person, with morning start times. Fees are charged to every guest in the party, whether or not they taste.
Reserve through Tock or call 707-942-8265. Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability, but a reservation is the safer bet, especially on weekends. Only service animals are allowed indoors, and there is no outdoor seating at present.
As always, line up a designated driver or a rideshare.
How it fits into a day
It is a compact stop, so it works as a lunchtime or late-afternoon add-on in town. Hours run later on Fridays through Mondays, which makes it handy when many tasting rooms have wrapped up. Check current times on their site before you go.
