What it's like

Envy Wines is on Tubbs Lane at the north end of the valley. The setting is a patio where you taste current releases and look out toward Old Faithful.

Who it's best for

Cabernet fans and small groups who like an outdoor, unhurried tasting. Tasting itself is restricted to guests 21 and older, though visitors of all ages can come onto the estate.

What to book

A tasting is $35 per person, waived with a purchase of two or more bottles. You can reserve in advance online with a $1 per-guest deposit. Walk-ins are always welcome for bottle purchases to enjoy on the grounds. For parties of nine or more, or specific questions, call 707-942-4670 or email club@envywines.com.

The winery welcomes visitors daily from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, so check current times on their site before you go. Line up a designated driver or rideshare.

How it fits into a day

Tubbs Lane puts you near Chateau Montelena, so the two pair well on a morning of Cabernet. Book Envy for late morning, then lunch in Calistoga. Because you can buy a bottle and relax on the patio, it also works as a loose end-of-day stop.
