What it's like

Sterling sits on a knoll above the valley floor, and you get up there by gondola. Every experience includes the round-trip ride, so the trip up is part of the visit rather than a detour. Once at the top you move through a self-guided or hosted tasting with the valley spread out below.

The lineup runs from a shorter option to longer seated visits. The Sterling Stroll is 60 minutes and costs $55 for adults, with a $25 rate for ages 3 to 20. Tour & Terrace is 90 minutes at $85 per person. The Hilltop Experience is 90 minutes at $95 per person and is 21 and over, and The Founder's Experience is 90 minutes at $150 per person, also 21 and over. There is also a roughly seven-hour, three-winery outing called Napa Narrative at $250 per person.

Who it's best for

Families and mixed groups, since the Stroll welcomes all ages and a non-drinking guest can join for a $25 ticket. It also suits first-time visitors who want a classic Napa view without much planning, and anyone who likes a visit with a bit of a ride and a vista built in.

What to book

Reservations are recommended, and some experiences require one. Walk-ins are welcome for the Sterling Stroll. Plan on the last tasting departing at 4:30pm, with the shop open until 5:00pm. Groups of 15 or more have their own booking route, so ask ahead if you are bringing a crowd.

Wine tasting and winding roads do not mix: arrange a designated driver, a rideshare, or a guided tour.

How it fits into a day

Give it a solid 90 minutes plus time for the gondola line on a busy day. It pairs easily with a morning here and lunch in downtown Calistoga, or with a short hop to Clos Pegase and Schramsberg nearby. Check current times on their site before you go.
