What it's like

Clos du Val sits on Silverado Trail and takes its inspiration from Bordeaux, a theme that runs through the tastings. The Hirondelle House Tasting is the standard introduction: 60 minutes, $75 per person, for parties of one to six, with a guided look at current releases, plus a seasonal dip and fresh sourdough.

Two longer sessions go deeper. The Past, Present, Future Yettalil Tasting is $100 per person for parties of one to four and runs 90 minutes in a secluded cabana, weather permitting, combining a library wine, a current release and a barrel sample of a future vintage, with cheese and charcuterie. The Retrospective Decade Tasting is $125 per person, 90 minutes, for up to six guests and focuses on aged library wines, again with cheese and charcuterie.

If you prefer to go at your own pace, the By The Glass Experience asks for a $10 refundable reservation fee, is self-guided in the patio or tasting room, offers an optional $12 food pairing, and walk-ins are welcome.

Who it's best for

People who like Bordeaux-style reds and want to understand how Napa Cabernet ages. The library and barrel-sample sessions suit curious drinkers, while the by-the-glass option works for anyone who just wants a glass and a seat. Guests must be 21 or older.

What to book

Book through Tock for the seated tastings. The site lists the winery as open Thursday to Monday, so check current days and times before you go. Members have a lounge on summer Saturdays.

Arrange a designated driver, rideshare or tour; Silverado Trail traffic builds up later in the day.

How it fits into a day

Clos du Val works well alongside Pine Ridge, Chimney Rock or Stags' Leap Winery along the same stretch of road. Plan one long session here, then a lighter stop and dinner in Napa or Yountville.
