What it's like

Shafer keeps its visits small and structured. There is no walk-up bar here: everything is by appointment, and the schedule runs Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. You choose between two experiences, both focused on the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District.

The Collectors Experience runs about 90 minutes at $140 per guest for up to eight people. It is a guided progression through current-release wines, and it includes the winery's Hillside Select. The Hillside Select Experience is the deeper dive: two hours, $295 per guest, for groups of two to eight. It pairs a vertical tasting of Hillside Select with a ride through the vineyard in a Polaris Ranger and seasonally inspired bites.

Who it's best for

This is a destination visit for people who already know they like Napa Cabernet and want a focused, unhurried session rather than a casual flight. The pricing reflects that, so it suits a milestone occasion, a collector, or a group who would rather do one memorable appointment than three quick ones. It is less suited to spontaneous plans, large parties or anyone who wants to wander in.

What to book

Reserve on Tock in advance and check which dates are open, since the weekday-plus-Saturday schedule limits availability. Choose the Collectors Experience if you want a polished tasting at a lower price, and the Hillside Select Experience if the vineyard ride and the vertical are the draw. Confirm the winery's current address and arrival instructions in your booking confirmation.

There is no public transport out here, so plan a designated driver, a rideshare or a private driver for the day.

How it fits into a day

Because each appointment runs 90 minutes to two hours, treat Shafer as the anchor of a half day. Book a morning slot, then have a relaxed lunch in Yountville or St. Helena and add a lighter stop nearby, such as Pine Ridge or Clos du Val, if you still have energy.
