What it's like
The French Laundry is the restaurant most people mean when they say Yountville is a dining town. It holds three Michelin stars, a Green Star and Relais & Chateaux membership, and the whole evening is built around a multi-course tasting menu that shifts a little each day. Expect a long, unhurried meal where the pacing, service and plating are as much the point as the food.
Two menus are offered daily: a Chef's Tasting Menu and a Tasting of Vegetables. If someone at your table skips meat, the vegetable menu is a full menu in its own right rather than an afterthought.
Who it's best for
Anniversaries, milestone birthdays and travelers who want one splurge meal on the trip. It is a poor fit for a spontaneous night, for anyone short on time, or for a group that wants to share plates and wander. Go in knowing you are committing a few hours.
What to order & how to book
There is no ordering in the usual sense: you choose between the two tasting menus and the kitchen takes it from there. Current menus are posted on the restaurant's site each day, and the price per person is shown there and at booking, so check it before you reserve.
Reservations go through Tock, and this is the step that takes effort. Decide on your dates early, log in ahead of time and have a couple of backups. The restaurant also offers a Culinary Garden experience through the same booking system, which is worth a look if the main dining room is full. Private dining and events are handled separately.
Because a long meal and wine go hand in hand, plan your ride in advance. Yountville is walkable if you are staying in town; otherwise arrange a rideshare, a car service or a designated driver.
How it fits into a day
Keep the day around it light. A late-morning stroll down Washington Street and a simple lunch somewhere casual work well, then dinner is the main event. Do not stack multiple winery tastings beforehand: you will want to be hungry and clear-headed. Check current dining hours and any dress guidance on the restaurant's site before you go.
