What it's like
Smith-Madrone is a working barn-winery high on Spring Mountain, run by the Smith family. A visit combines a tour and a tasting in the actual workspace, with views back toward the Napa Valley floor. It is closer to a visit with a farmer than a tasting-room experience, which is exactly why people seek it out.
Who it's best for
People who want to hear how a mountain estate is farmed, and who appreciate Riesling and Chardonnay as much as Cabernet. It is a good choice for curious drinkers and small groups. It is less suited to travelers who want flexibility, since there are only a few visit times each week.
What to book
Visits are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and the booking is made on Tock. The tasting covers the estate wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling, and the tour and tasting runs around 75 minutes. The fee listed is $65 per person; confirm it when you book. If online booking gives you trouble, call 707-963-2283.
Mountain roads and wine do not mix: arrange a designated driver, a private car or a guided tour. The final stretch is narrow and winding.
How it fits into a day
The 10 am start makes it an obvious first stop. Afterward you can head down for lunch in St. Helena, or visit another Spring Mountain producer if you have booked it ahead; Pride Mountain and Barnett are on the same side of the valley. Allow extra drive time both ways.
