What it's like

Laird Family Estate is an easygoing tasting room on Solano Avenue, a little off the main wine-country strip. Families and well-behaved pets are welcome, and outside food is permitted for picnicking, which makes it friendlier than many Napa stops for a mixed group. Reservations are required for all tastings.

Food pairings are also on offer if you would rather not pack a picnic.

Who it's best for

Groups with kids or dogs, picnickers, and anyone who prefers a simple flight format. The maximum group size is 12, with groups of nine or more asked to contact the tasting room directly, so it handles a mid-sized party well.

What to book

• Veraison Flight, $50 per person: five wines, moving from white to red.
• Big Red's Flight, $60 per person: five red wines.
• Bottle Service, $65 per person (groups of 9 to 12): non-drinkers are $10.
• Winery Tour & Tasting, $125 per person: includes a tour, a flight, a cheese board and chocolates. Offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30am or 1:30pm.

The tasting room is open daily from 10am to 5pm, with the last tasting at 4pm. It closes on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year's Eve and Day.

How it fits into a day

Solano Avenue sits north of downtown Napa, close to Highway 29 and Trancas, so it fits comfortably between a morning in Yountville and an afternoon elsewhere. Bring lunch and make it a picnic stop, or pair it with a restaurant meal nearby. Because every visit is a timed reservation, book ahead for weekends and arrange a designated driver, a rideshare or a tour.
