What it's like

Ashes & Diamonds stands apart from the typical Napa tasting room. The property has a mid-century modern look, and the winemaking leans toward minimal intervention. Tastings are paced by experience, from a short introduction to a longer pairing, and there is seasonal California Nouvelle cuisine with Mexican influences available.

It keeps later hours than many of its neighbors, which helps if you are filling out an afternoon.

Who it's best for

Design-minded visitors and people who want a lighter, modern take on Napa wine. It also suits anyone wanting to add food to the tasting. Members get extras such as discounted wine and pool access, but you do not need to be a member to visit.

The winery is open daily from 11am to 6:30pm, and the final reservations close at 5:00pm.

How it fits into a day

Howard Lane is just north of downtown Napa, close to Highway 29, so the winery is an easy late-afternoon stop, either before dinner in Napa or Yountville or as the last tasting after a day elsewhere. If you add the food experience, plan it as a meal and skip a separate lunch. As with any tasting day, arrange a designated driver, a rideshare or a driver-guided tour in advance, and book ahead for weekends.
