The Charter Oak

What it's like

The Charter Oak is built around a wood-fired hearth and a small working farm on the property. The cooking is deliberately plain: good produce, simply handled, and plated to share. You can eat in the dining room or out on the patio, and the garden is part of the view either way.

The menu leans on the hearth. Grilled octopus and beef chuck tartare make good starters, then mains like steelhead trout, a pork chop, a lamb shoulder chop or a hearth-grilled chicken. There is also a cheeseburger for anyone who wants something easier. Most hearth dishes sit between roughly $42 and $72, and desserts such as mochi cake or burnt chocolate cream run about $14 to $15.

Who it's best for

Groups who like to pass plates, couples who want a long dinner without a tasting-menu commitment, and anyone curious to see where their vegetables came from. The all-day menu and a weekday locals' lunch make it workable if you are not eating at 7 p.m.

Book through Resy, especially for dinner and weekend brunch. Hours are Monday to Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Weekend brunch runs 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and a weekday happy hour runs 2:30 to 5 p.m. If you are sharing, order a couple of starters and one large hearth dish for the table. You can also order online for takeout or delivery.

How it fits into a day

It makes an easy lunch stop between morning tastings and an afternoon wander through St. Helena, or a relaxed dinner to close out the day. If you are driving between wineries, plan a rideshare or a designated driver for the evening. Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch and Cook St. Helena are other options in town if the Charter Oak is booked.
