Gott's Roadside (St. Helena)

What it's like

Gott's is a roadside burger stand with a California twist, feeding St. Helena and passing visitors since 1999. It is a casual, order-at-the-counter spot with lots of room outdoors: picnic grounds with four seating areas called South Lawn, The Grove, Front Patio and North Patio. Communal tables, high chairs and ADA-accessible seating are all on offer.

Who it's best for

Families, groups with a mix of tastes and budgets, and anyone who wants a relaxed meal between winery appointments. It is easy with kids, since the lawn gives them room to move around.

What to order & how to book

Burgers are the draw, including the California burger, the blue cheese burger and tuna or ahi burgers. There are also ahi tuna tacos, fried Brussels sprouts, chicken tenders, salads, soups and chili. Wine and beer are served.

There is no reservation system to worry about: you order and find a spot, and the grounds absorb a lot of people. You can also order for pickup or delivery online. Hours are Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Expect lines at peak lunch and on summer weekends. Free parking is available in two adjacent lots and along Main Street.

How it fits into a day

Gott's is on Highway 29 in St. Helena, so it slots in as a quick, casual lunch before an afternoon of tastings. If you have a glass of wine with your burger, arrange a designated driver or rideshare for the rest of the day. For a sit-down dinner afterwards, Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch and The Charter Oak are in town.
