What it's like

Turnbull is a relaxed, garden-lined stop on Highway 29 that pours wines from vineyards it farms itself. The Gallery Tasting is the easygoing way in, with art on the walls and a casual feel. For something quieter there are private tastings in the house or on the vineyard terrace.

It is notably less formal than neighbors, which is part of the appeal.

Who it's best for

Casual visitors who want a no-fuss tasting, small groups, and Cabernet lovers who would like a private option for a special visit.

What to book

The Gallery Tasting is $65 per flight, daily 10am to 4pm; reservations are recommended and walk-ins are welcome. The Private Estate Tasting is $110 per guest, 10am to 2pm, with advance reservation required by phone (707-963-5839) or email (concierge@turnbullwines.com). The Terroir Experience is $175 per guest, 10am to 2pm, also with advance reservation and booking by email. A members' room is available based on availability. Fees for members differ.

As everywhere in the valley, plan on a designated driver, a rideshare, or a tour service, since tastings add up over a day.

How it fits into a day

Turnbull is a quick drive from Opus One, Silver Oak and Robert Mondavi Winery. Use the walk-in flexibility to fit it between reservations, and head to Yountville or St. Helena for lunch.
