Hendry is a working family farm, and a visit feels like one. The ranch covers 203 acres in the foothills of the Mayacamas mountains, northwest of the city of Napa, with steep wooded hillsides, a creek corridor along Redwood Creek and 114 acres of vines. The family has farmed it since 1939, and every Hendry wine comes from this estate. The winery places the ranch one mile from Carneros, next to the Mount Veeder appellation and just inside the western edge of Oak Knoll, which gives the grapes a transitional climate between the cooler south and the warmer north of the valley.

One thing that stands out is range. The ranch grows a dozen grape varieties, most of them red, so a tasting can wander from lighter, fruitier reds up to structured Cabernet-style bottlings, and the Classic tasting adds whites. If you like seeing where wine comes from and hearing how a single property fits together, this is a strong choice.

What to book: all tastings are by appointment only, and appointments are private and hosted by a guide. The website lists three flights: a Red Wine Flight at about 60 minutes ($50 per person), a Hendry Classic Tasting of 60 to 90 minutes ($75), and a Winemaker's Reserve Flight of 60 to 90 minutes ($100). The fee is waived when you buy wine equal to the fee. Call 707-226-8320 or use the request buttons on the visit page; tastings run roughly 10am to 3pm daily.

The practical rules are clear and worth reading before you go. Parties are limited to six people, everyone must be 21 or older, and a credit card is required to hold the booking. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead to avoid the per-person fee, and arrive on time, since lateness of 15 minutes or more is charged. Well-behaved dogs are welcome outdoors only, on a leash, and the winery asks you to mention yours when you book. Tastings can be indoors or out, and mornings can be foggy, so bring layers.

How it fits into a day: Redwood Road is a short drive from the city of Napa, so Hendry slots in nicely as a morning appointment before lunch downtown. Because there is no walk-in option and groups are small, it pairs better with one or two other booked stops than with a packed schedule. As always, plan the driving: pick a designated driver, hire a car or tour, or use a rideshare, and confirm your pickup before you head up the hill.
