Cuvaison Estate Wines (Carneros)

What it's like

Cuvaison's Carneros estate sits on Duhig Road, away from the main wine-country traffic. The property is quiet and spread out, and tastings are by appointment, so you are never competing for a spot at a crowded bar. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the natural fit for this cool, bay-influenced end of the valley.

The menu of experiences is broad, which is helpful because the length and price swing quite a bit.

Visitors who like a calm, private-feeling setting and want to pick how deep to go. A short, lower-priced option is there for a quick stop, and longer sessions suit people who want to spend an afternoon.

All experiences need advance reservations, made on Tock, by phone at 707-942-2466 or by email. Some require 24 to 48 hours notice. Guests must be 21 or older.

• The VineYard Tasting, $40 per person: 45 to 60 minutes, up to six guests.
• Estate Tasting, $60 per person: 60 minutes, up to four guests.
• Winemaker's Tasting, $85 per person: 90 minutes, up to six guests.
• Wine Tails Trail, $75 to $100 per person: about two hours, up to four guests.
• Boathouse Winemaker's, $130 per person: 90 minutes, two to six guests, with an $800 minimum.

The tasting room keeps longer hours Friday to Monday, 10am to 5pm, and shorter ones Tuesday to Thursday, 11am to 3pm.

How it fits into a day

Book a morning or early-afternoon appointment and pair it with another Carneros neighbor such as Saintsbury, Etude or Bouchaine, then head into downtown Napa for lunch. The roads here are rural, so arrange a designated driver, a rideshare or a driver-guided tour before you taste. If you are visiting Tuesday to Thursday, remember the day closes earlier, so plan your last appointment accordingly.
