What it's like
Ceja sits on Burndale Road in the Carneros district, on the Sonoma side of the valley's southern edge. The setting is open vineyard country, with a private outdoor seating area looking out over the Carneros countryside. It is a small, appointment-only operation, which gives the visit a hosted, unhurried feel.
The winery is next door to Hanson of Sonoma Distillery, so the neighborhood is easy to spot when you pull in.
Who it's best for
Weekend visitors who want a quieter alternative to the busy tasting rooms along Highway 29, and who like sitting outdoors. It suits couples and small groups. Because pets are not permitted (service animals only), leave the dog at home.
What to book
The tasting is $40 per person and includes a minimum of five wines from the portfolio, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Plan on about an hour.
Reservations are mandatory. For parties of one to six, email wine@cejavineyards.com with your preferred date, time and party size. Larger parties of seven to twelve need to book in advance for 11:00am or earlier on select days, and tasting fees are prepaid.
Ceja is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm, with last seating at 2:30pm. It is closed Monday to Thursday and on various holidays, so confirm your date on their site before you set out.
How it fits into a day
This is a good late-morning stop on a weekend, leaving the afternoon free for lunch in the town of Sonoma or in Napa, both a short drive away. Pair it with another Carneros winery such as Saintsbury, Cuvaison or Etude if you want a full Carneros day. As everywhere in wine country, arrange a designated driver, a rideshare or a tour before you begin.
