Watch before you go
Artesa is the winery you reach before you feel like you have reached Napa Valley at all. It sits up on the hills of Los Carneros, the cool, breezy stretch at the southern gateway to the valley, and the first thing you notice is the building: distinctive pyramid architecture wrapped around a gravity-flow winery, with hillside vineyards falling away below. The estate covers 350 acres, and the setting is a large part of the pitch.
The wines lean toward what grows well in a cooler climate. The winery talks about its sparkling wine heritage and also makes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other cool-climate varieties. Jean-Charles Boisset took over in 2026, so expect the place to keep evolving, and check the website for what is currently on offer.
This is a good fit if you want a seated, unhurried tasting with a view rather than a stand-at-the-bar scrum. It also works for mixed groups. The winery asks that families sit in the outdoor patio or a designated indoor area because of the indoor bar seating, and anyone under 21 (infants aside) should be counted when you book. Charcuterie and cheese boards come with the winery's upper-tier tasting experiences, and seasonal food is available to buy.
What to book: reserve through Tock. The winery encourages advance booking, especially on weekends, and sometimes has same-day openings midweek if you call 707-200-2038. There is a $30 per person security deposit that is refunded when you arrive, and the tasting itself is paid for separately. You do not have to pick a specific experience when you reserve; you can decide with your host once you are there. The tasting room is open daily from 10:30am to 5pm, with the last seating at 4pm.
A couple of house rules are worth knowing. There are no self-guided tours, and guests are asked not to wander the grounds or walk into the vineyards on their own, since wildlife lives on the estate. If you have not booked, do not count on simply walking the property.
How it fits into a day: Artesa is an easy first or last stop if you are coming from San Francisco or heading back that way, about an hour from the city by the winery's own estimate. Pair it with other Carneros stops nearby, or head up toward the town of Napa for lunch. As with anywhere in the valley, tasting and driving do not mix: nominate a designated driver, book a tour or car service, or use a rideshare, keeping in mind that pickups from a hilltop estate can take a little longer to arrange.
