What it's like

Lovina sits in a historic house, about 120 years old, on Calistoga's main street. The owner makes the pottery used in the restaurant, which gives the place a personal feel. The cooking is fresh seasonal California food with an Italian slant, and there are wine, cocktail and mocktail lists.

One thing to know before you go: Lovina runs a tip-free model. Prices include a revenue share, paid vacation, health and dental benefits, and a 401(k) match for the staff, so the menu price is the price.

Couples, small groups, and anyone who wants a cozier, neighborhood-feeling dinner in Calistoga rather than a resort dining room. The weekend brunch is a good option if you are staying in town.

What to order & how to book

Follow the seasonal menu and ask the server what is new. Dinner is served nightly from 5 to 9 p.m., and weekend brunch runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weekday lunch is available only for groups of 10 or more by contacting the restaurant directly. Reservations are encouraged, particularly around holidays and special occasions, and you can book from the reservations page on their site. How it fits into a day

Lovina is an easy walk from most of downtown Calistoga, so it pairs well with a day of tastings or a soak at one of the town's spas. For other dinners in town, Evangeline and Sam's Social Club are close by. If you are driving out to wineries beforehand, plan for a rideshare or designated driver.
